Friday inspiration: Elsie de Wolfe
Do you guys ever get so inspired by something that you just HAVE to sit down and write about it? That happened to me tonight while looking up the author of one of my favorite quotes: "I am going to make everything around me beautiful. That will be my life."
All I really knew about Elsie de Wolfe was that she is the author of that quote, so I looked her up out of curiously and I'm incredibly impressed and inspired by her. She was an interior designer when the field was just beginning in the early 1900s. Some sources have claimed her to be the most famous name in early interior design and even as the 'first lady of interior decoration'. In addition to design, she was also an actress and an author and in general, a great influencer of her time. A wikipedia article stated that in 1926 the New York Times described de Wolfe as "one of the most widely known women in New York social life".
Here is another amazing quote of hers, found on Matchbookmag.com.
"Be pretty if you can, be witty if you must, but be gracious if it kills you."
I am so in love with that quote for the subtle and unexpected profundity she puts on gratitude at the end. I am such a believer in gratitude and I think that it's a tool we can all use to increase our well-being. I also love finding positive, uplifting women to be inspired by- past and present. Tell me - who inspires you? I would love to hear!
